Pride and Premeditation by Tirzah Price
Book #1 in the Jane Austen Murder Mystery series.
Rating: ★★★★✰
Dates Read: 5/13/23 - 5/14/23
In a world where young women with aspirations of a law career must prove themselves, sixteen-year-old Lizzie Bennet seizes an opportunity to showcase her skills when a scandalous society murder comes to her attention. Eager to solve the case and achieve justice, Lizzie is determined to outwit Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, the heir to the prestigious Pemberley Associates law firm, who is already representing the accused.
Despite Darcy's infuriating snobbishness, Lizzie is determined to prove that women are just as capable as men. However, the danger intensifies as the killer remains at large, and the case becomes increasingly complex. Reluctantly, Lizzie and Darcy may need to set aside their differences and work together to prevent becoming the next targets of the ruthless murderer.
Pride and Premeditation pleasantly surprised me as a YA historical mystery with a fresh twist on the beloved Pride and Prejudice world. As a fan of the original classic, I was nervous about a retelling, but the author skillfully stayed true to the essence of the original while adding a captivating murder mystery. The story felt like its own unique tale, borrowing key moments and character traits from P&P to create something new and enjoyable.
I loved the idea of Lizzie and Darcy becoming rival detectives investigating the same crime. Though it required some adjustment, it was fascinating to see them clash and gradually gain respect for each other. Lizzie, as a bold and clever heroine, was a joy to follow, and her interactions with her sisters, especially Jane and Lydia, added depth to the story.
While the mystery wasn't overly intricate, it still offered plenty of suspense, excitement, and some unexpected twists. The courtroom drama was a nice addition, adding to the intrigue of the plot. The epilogue provided a satisfying conclusion, and I'm excited to read the other books in the series that takes on other Austen novels.
Overall, Pride and Premeditation was an entertaining read that kept me engaged with its charming characters and engrossing storyline. If you're a fan of mystery and enjoy revisiting beloved Pride & Prejudice characters in a new setting, this book is a delightful choice.
