The Plot by Jean Hanff Korelitz

 Rating: ★★★☆☆

Dates Read: 2/7/23 - 2/8/23

Jacob Finch Bonner, a struggling writer turned MFA program teacher, is intrigued when his arrogant student, Evan Parker, claims to have a foolproof plot for a novel. But when Evan dies without completing the book, Jacob seizes the opportunity to make it his own, skyrocketing his career to fame and fortune. However, his success was soon threatened by an anonymous email accusing him of theft. Determined to uncover the truth, Jacob dives into Evan's life, unraveling the enigmatic origins of the stolen plot. As he delves deeper, he becomes entangled in a dangerous web of deceit, facing the consequences of his choices and someone else's obsession.

The idea for this book is what drew me in, initially, but the writing is what slowly pushed me away. I loved the idea, and that part of this novel was executed so well. However, I don't want to read a paragraph that goes on for what feels like three pages. To be honest, I definitely would have DNF'd this had I not been gifted a physical copy.

It felt a bit predictable with all of the foreshadowing. This book was a three-star read for me, and only because the author executed the book aspect of this novel very well. I enjoyed being able to read the novel in question as well as "The Plot" itself. That being said, I did not like the main character ever. I'm not sure you're supposed to, but I almost couldn't make myself read it because I hated him so much.

However, this was a three-star for me because of how fun the idea was and how quickly I flew through the ending. Unfortunately, I don't think this is the author for me, but if this novel sounds interesting to you, definitely give it a shot!
