The Perfect Stranger by Megan Miranda

Rating: ★☆☆

Dates Read: 9/26/23 - 10/2/23

Confronted with a restraining order and the threat of legal action, Leah Stevens, a failed journalist, escapes Boston and reunites with her old friend Emmy Grey, who is recovering from a troubled relationship. They move to rural Pennsylvania for a fresh start, but their plans unravel when a woman resembling Leah is attacked near the lake, and Emmy goes missing soon after.

Desperate to find Emmy, Leah teams up with Kyle Donovan, a young police officer. During their investigation, Leah questions whether she truly knew Emmy. With no digital presence and no supportive evidence, doubts arise about Emmy's existence. Leah’s past, including a damaging article that ruined her career, resurfaces, putting her credibility in jeopardy. To clear her name and uncover Emmy’s truth, Leah must confront her demons, navigate a web of secrets in the town, and determine who she can trust.

In this secretive Pennsylvania community, where everyone harbors secrets, Leah grapples with her own hidden past. The challenge becomes unraveling the truth while concealing her own secrets.

"The Perfect Stranger" by Miranda offers a rollercoaster of a read, but it left me with mixed feelings. While Miranda's writing is top-notch, painting vivid scenes that could easily grace the big screen, the story felt like it had too many puzzle pieces that didn't quite fit. Leah, the main character, made some frustrating decisions, and the plotlines seemed a bit all over the place.

On the bright side, I absolutely adored the audiobook version. It sucked me right into the story, making it easy to get lost in the setting. Miranda's knack for unfolding details slowly kept me hooked, even though the overall conclusion left me wanting. I appreciate a good mystery, but this one felt like it fell off the edge without a satisfying climax. Despite my gripes, Miranda's storytelling talent is undeniable, and I will absolutely read more from this author.
