The Younger Wife by Sally Hepworth
Rating: ★★★☆☆
Dates Read: 10/20/23 - 10/24/23
Stephen Aston, a renowned heart surgeon, is about to marry Heather, his younger fiancée, but first, he must divorce his current wife, who is incapacitated and unable to speak for herself. Stephen's daughters, Tully and Rachel, view Heather suspiciously, believing she's only after their father's money. As tensions rise within the family, the daughters are determined to uncover their family's hidden secrets before Heather's arrival. However, Heather also harbors secrets of her own, and the quest for truth threatens to unleash dangerous impulses in everyone involved.
Hepworth's writing in this book is incredibly engaging, just like her other works. I couldn't put it down; it kept me hooked, making me fly through the pages.
However, the characters, especially the women, felt excessively dramatic and exaggerated. Their over-the-top personalities made it hard to connect with them on a real level. Despite this, they did keep me entertained throughout the story.
I've heard talk about an alternate ending, although I didn't read the ARC, so I can't confirm. Personally, I didn't love the ending in the version I read. Given all the manipulation within the story, I would have preferred a more straightforward conclusion. That being said, I am a fan of Hepworth, and I've enjoyed pretty much everything I've read from her.
