The Box in the Woods by Maureen Johnson

Truly Devious #4

Rating: ★★★★☆

Dates Read: 11/11/23 - 11/13/23

Amateur sleuth Stevie Bell is craving a good murder mystery after solving one at her high school. Her mundane summer takes a thrilling turn when the owner of Sunny Pines, formerly Camp Wonder Falls and the site of the infamous Box in the Woods Murders, invites her to work on a true crime podcast about the case. Stevie, eager for a summer of investigation, brings her friends from Ellingham Academy along. Little do they know, the evil that haunted Barlow Corners in 1978 still lingers. As Stevie delves into the long-dormant case, she discovers more than she bargained for, and the Box in the Woods threatens to claim new victims, putting Stevie's own life at risk.

This book easily tops my list in the series. It's a rollercoaster of action, tension, and just all-around goodness. Seriously, "The Box in the Woods" is like a literary addiction—unputdownable, thrilling, and one of the quickest reads for me. Even if you haven't read the Truly Devious series, no worries; the author skillfully recaps past events, letting you hop on this wild ride with ease.

The shift in setting with "The Box in the Woods" was a nostalgic and enjoyable twist. While I love Ellingham Academy, the change of pace was refreshing, and the summer camp vibe added a delightful touch of mystery. The plot was clever, campy, and had me hooked from the start.

Oh, and for anyone curious about David, he's back. I must say, he really grew on me in this one. His character development is on point, and I'm genuinely excited to see where the next book takes their relationship.
