The Coworker by Freida McFadden

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Dates Read: 11/1/23 - 11/2/23

In the office of Vixed, Dawn Schiff, the odd and friendless accountant, vanishes one day. Her coworker Natalie Farrell, a popular sales rep, is surprised. A mysterious call reveals Dawn was targeted, pulling Natalie into a dangerous game. The question arises: who's the real victim? It's clear someone despised Dawn enough to kill her.

This book had its moments. The characters were introduced well through their emails, and I liked that the main character wasn't dumb for a change. But, man, it dragged on forever. The plot twists were just plain ridiculous; I couldn't believe half of what was happening. Sometimes, it felt like the author was trying too hard to be serious and ended up sounding childish.

The story became predictable, following the same patterns as the author's other books. Even when they tried a different angle, it didn't really work; I felt like I'd read it all before.

The characters didn't impress me, and the constant mention of turtles got annoying real fast. I wish I had a physical copy just to count how many times they said it.

Overall, it's what you'd expect from this author. Weirdly, though, I couldn't put it down despite all its flaws. I didn't love it, yet I will still be reading whatever she comes up with next, McFadden is a go-to for me.
