The Hand on the Wall by Maureen Johnson
Truly Devious #3
Rating: ★★★★☆
Dates Read: 11/10/23 - 11/11/23
Ellingham Academy seems cursed, with three deaths occurring under mysterious circumstances. Stevie, who believes she's solved the case of Truly Devious, is thrown off course by the recent tragedies. She is convinced there's a connection between the present deaths and the past deaths. With a storm approaching and the academy evacuated, Stevie decides to stay behind, determined to face both the tempest and a potential murderer. The intricate web of riddles and puzzles holds the key to unraveling the mysteries that haunt Ellingham Academy.
I absolutely loved the first two books, and this one was a solid continuation of the series. It was great to fill in some gaps about the historic Truly Devious case, and the alternating perspectives between past and present timelines added to the intrigue. The information in this installment really helped clear up some questions I had about the earlier timeline, but now I'm left wondering where it goes from here. The ending left me at a very intriguing point, and I can't wait to dive into the next book.
Stevie, the main character, has grown so much since the beginning. Her confidence is on the rise, and I'm excited to see her further develop as she tackles the mysteries around her. In the first book, I struggled with liking the characters, especially Stevie, but their quirky personalities grew on me throughout the trilogy. I still just don't love David.
The best part of these books is the mystery surrounding the Ellingham case, and it became even clearer in this book. Everything started to connect and make sense, with puzzle pieces falling into place. The way Maureen connected the past and present was spot-on, and I enjoyed piecing everything together. I'm pleased with the revelations we got and how the trilogy concluded. Unlike some mystery novels where the ending feels rushed, this one had a great pace as everything came together. The trilogy couldn't have ended any other way, and I'm happy with how it all wrapped up.
