The Vanishing Stair by Maureen Johnson
Truly Devious #2
Rating: ★★★★☆
Dates Read: 11/8/23 - 11/9/23
Stevie Bell just wanted to solve the Ellingham mystery, but things got messy when a classmate ended up dead. After cracking that case, her parents yank her out of Ellingham academy for safety reasons. Stevie feels out of touch without her quirky friends and secret tunnels. Then, politician Edward King strikes a deal to bring her back, with the condition that she befriend David, who lied about his identity. Stevie is close to unraveling Ellingham's secrets, but the journey involves hurting someone she cares about. In the Truly Devious series, finding the truth comes at a cost—maybe even someone's life. The sequel steps up its game with more secrets, higher tension, and a quicker pace. The characters dive into the past, untangling mysteries that keep you hooked until the sudden but gripping end. Stevie's mix of caution and daring is relatable, and the cast, especially Nate, brings depth. New characters, like Dr. Irene Fenton, shake things up. It skips the intros and jumps right in. I grew to love Stevie in this novel, she's more relatable, and David's backstory explains a lot. The real cliffhanger at the end gives some answers but leaves me with more questions, especially about the student murders. "The Vanishing Stair" is a wild ride, and I'm pumped for the next one to spill all the secrets.
