Good Half Gone by Tarryn Fisher

Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3.5/5)

Dates Read: 12/5/23 - 12/9/23

Iris's life changed forever when she witnessed the kidnapping of her twin sister, Piper. Despite Iris's pleas, the police dismissed her claims and the case went cold. Years later, still haunted by the memory and driven by a desperate need for answers, Iris takes matters into her own hands.

She secures an internship at Shoal Island Hospital, a remote mental institution with a dark past. Rumors abound of secrets lurking within its walls, and Iris suspects one of the patients holds the key to unlocking the truth about Piper's disappearance.

As Iris delves deeper into the hospital's secrets, she realizes that something far more sinister than she could have imagined is at play. The patients are not the only ones being observed, and Iris soon finds herself in a dangerous game with unknown players.

I'm a big fan of Tarryn Fisher, but the central twist wasn't entirely surprising to me. The novel's strength lies in its emotional core and compelling character relationships. I really liked Iris's determination. Her relationships with other characters, particularly her grandmother and Cal, were enough for me to not be bothered that the mystery seemed very obvious.

I do think that some of the plot in the middle could've been left out, and if the middle had been more focused on what Iris was supposed to be doing, I probably would've rated this higher.

Despite this slight dip in pacing, 'Good Half Gone' remains a captivating read. Big thanks to NetGalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. 'Good Half Gone' is expected to publish on March 19, 2024!
