“The first year is when some of us lose our lives. The second year is when the rest of us lose our humanity.”“Violence, remember it's only the body that's fragile. You are unbreakable.”
This series has me completely hooked. Book 2 seamlessly continues the narrative from the first, navigating an emotional journey that builds upon the established storyline. The character development and the introduction of new riders add depth to the narrative, presenting a well-executed follow-up that both addresses lingering questions and introduces new ones.
I enjoyed the overall pacing of the book. While the initial half of the book may appear to progress at a slower pace, it becomes evident that it serves as a deliberate build-up for the heightened stakes in the latter portion. The way it progressed through intensity and unpredictability throughout the story sucked me in, and the elements of fantasy, political intrigue, and world-building contributed to the richness of the plot. While romance remains a component, the narrative places a greater emphasis on its intricate storyline. I really enjoyed the focus on the storyline, and it's hard to believe it happened within 600 pages. The romance wasn't as good to me up until the end here. The constant fighting between Xaden and Violet was exhausting. I understand both sides, but the whole
"Tell me the truth."
"Okay, ask me anything."
"No, you should just tell me."
was absolutely infuriating! On the other hand though, knowing she wants the truth, Violet shouldn't be expected to drag it out of him.
The second half of the book was a whirlwind, leaving a lasting impact. Yarros, I am so stressed about this ending. I am so ready for book 3, and not ready at all to wait for it.
