The Brothers Hawthorne by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
The Inheritance Games #4
Rating: ★★★★☆ (4.5/5)
Dates Read: 12/9/23 - 12/10/23
The Brother's Hawthorne keeps the suspense rolling in the Hawthorne family saga, but not all chapters hit the mark. I enjoyed Grayson's chapters way more than Jameson's. I think the premise of Devil's Mercy and Jameson's game were good, but I just didn't connect with it the way I did with Grayson's chapters.
I really enjoyed the relationship between Jameson and Avery by the end of The Final Gambit, but they fell flat for me here. The chemistry wasn't there this time. I understand Jameson is supposed to be stressed and keeping a secret, but Avery is barely in this book. I get it's meant to be about the brothers, but she seemed like such an integral part of Jameson's game in the beginning. I also wish we had more Xander! He was still so hilarious, and I needed more.
That being said, the book shines when it comes to building excitement for The Grandest Game. The way Grayson's game concluded created so much suspense for me. Between Eve, the mysterious phone calls, and that bombshell ending? I need a Grayson HEA, and I need the answers that will undoubtedly be in The Grandest Game, immediately.
Overall, between the way I felt about the first three books and Grayson's story being so interesting, I thoroughly enjoyed this. At this point, if it has Jennifer Lynn Barnes' name on it, I'll read it. I love the characters, the writing, the mysteries, and I can't wait for The Grandest Game.
