The It Girl by Ruth Ware
Rating: ★★★☆☆
Dates Read: 11/27/23 - 11/29/23
At Oxford, April Coutts-Cliveden was Hannah Jones' first acquaintance—charismatic, brilliant, and occasionally ruthless, she drew Hannah into an enchanting circle of friends, including Will, Hugh, Ryan, and Emily. However, April met a tragic end by the second term. A decade later, as Hannah and Will anticipate their first child, the convicted killer, former Oxford porter John Neville, dies in prison. Just when Hannah believes the past is behind her, a journalist surfaces with evidence suggesting Neville may have been innocent. As Hannah reconnects with old friends, she discovers hidden secrets, realizing that the friends she thought she knew harbored dark truths. Ruth Ware's latest book kept me engaged with its back-and-forth between past and present. The twist was a bit easy to guess, but the overall ride was solid.
I found the past part more interesting at first, but the present part caught up eventually. Ware is very skilled when it comes to building up the tension, and the ending had some pretty intense moments.
If you've liked Ware's other stuff, you'll probably enjoy this one too. I'd recommend it for the suspense and Ware's reliable storytelling. Looking forward to whatever she writes next.
