If Something Happens to Me by Alex Finlay
Rating: ★★★★☆
Dates Read: 12/30/23 - 1/1/24
Ryan Richardson has been haunted by that one night five years ago, when his girlfriend, Ali, was abducted in front of him. Despite suspicions and the absence of proof, Ryan faces the relentless scrutiny of podcasters and online critics. Eager to escape his past, he adopts a new identity and pursues a law degree.
However, the past resurfaces during a school trip to Italy when Ryan receives a call from his father revealing the discovery of Ali's car, submerged in a hometown lake with a cryptic note. The unfolding mystery propels Ryan on an international journey—from the hills of Tuscany to a UK village and the streets of Paris. Unaware of the unlikely allies awaiting him, including a rookie sheriff’s deputy in Kansas and a Philadelphia mobster with his own tragedies, Ryan races against time to uncover the truth behind the cryptic note and the events that have haunted him for years.
Through the second half of this, I couldn't stop thinking about how it would totally make a great movie. At first, the different perspectives threw me off a bit, but once I got the hang of it, I couldn't stop reading. The way the story unfolds from different points of view adds a cool layer to the triple plot. I didn't see how the three stories would connect at first, but when it all comes together, it's super well done and everything clicks.
This is my third read from Finlay, and it might just be my favorite. I loved Poppy's character, especially with Agent Keller not being in this novel. Finlay is 100% an auto-read author for me, and I highly recommend this!
