Caraval by Stephanie Garber

Caraval #1

Rating: ★★★★☆

Dates Read: 2/9/24 - 2/9/24

Scarlett Dragna has lived her whole life on a small island with her strict father. When he arranges a marriage for her, Scarlett thinks her dream of attending Caraval, a magical annual performance, is over. But then her sister Tella and a mysterious sailor help Scarlett get to Caraval. Once there, Tella is kidnapped by Legend, the man behind Caraval. The game this year is to find Tella, and Scarlett must locate her before it's too late.

Even though she's told Caraval is just a show, Scarlett finds herself caught up in a world of love, magic, and danger. With only five nights to find her sister, Scarlett must unravel the mysteries of Caraval to save Tella from disappearing forever.

Welcome, welcome to Caraval . . . beware of getting swept too far away.

Caraval takes readers on a thrilling adventure through a magical world where surprises lurk around every corner. The story moved at a pace that kept my heart racing without overwhelming me. One of the best parts of the book is how naturally the relationship between the main characters develops. It felt real and added depth to the story.

I felt like Scarlett was very relatable with her fear, and her sense of duty and family. It was easy to put myself in her shoes as she tried to unravel the mysteries of Caraval to find her sister. I was right there with her, following every clue and twist.

The characters are well-rounded, making me want to root for them, even though I'm not sure who to trust. This added to the suspense and kept me guessing until the very end. Overall, Caraval is a thrilling read that has me eagerly awaiting more from Stephanie Garber.
