One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus
One of Us Is Lying #1
Rating: ★★★★☆
Dates Read: 1/24/24 - 1/26/24
Five Bayview High students, each representing a different high school stereotype, find themselves in detention on a Monday afternoon. Simon, the school's outcast and creator of a gossip app, dies during the detention, and it's no accident. He planned to reveal secrets about his four high-profile classmates on Tuesday, making them murder suspects. The investigation unfolds, exposing everyone's secrets and questioning how far each would go to protect them. The students, Bronwyn, Addy, Nate, and Cooper, become entangled in a murder mystery that keeps readers guessing about the true identity of the killer still on the loose.
I've finished the series at the time of posting this, so I have officially read all of McManus' books, with the exception of Such Charming Liars. One thing that is a constant for me with her novels is the nostalgic feel to them. She always nails the YA vibe.
I really enjoyed this, I loved the audiobook format, and I really loved the Breakfast Club feel to it. I felt like the pacing was perfect, and it kept me hooked from the very beginning. I loved all of the main characters, but by the end of the book, Nate and Addy were my favorites.
I was also pleasantly surprised by the ending. I think McManus did a great job of throwing enough red herrings out to keep you distracted, and as I got closer and closer to the end, I was going 'well, who WAS it?'
McManus had already solidified herself as an auto-read author for me, so it was no surprise that I liked this so much. I absolutely flew through this series, so reviews for those are posting right after this, but I cannot wait to read McManus' newest book when it releases.
