Beneath the Stairs by Jennifer Fawcett

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Dates Read: 3/22/24 - 3/23/24

In the quiet town of Sumner’s Mills, there's a spooky Octagon House hidden in the woods. Twenty years ago, Clare and her friend Abby went inside, but only Clare came out. Now, Abby's attempted suicide there, and Clare, still grieving from her own loss, goes back to find out what happened.

This book felt like it could have been a little shorter and lost its way toward the end. I was left with a lot of unanswered questions and felt disappointed with how some things unfolded. However, I did like the mix of supernatural and psychological elements, which kept me intrigued.

Although there were loose ends, I think the author shows promise with this debut. Despite its flaws, I enjoyed reading it and am curious to see what they'll do next.
