The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins

The Hunger Games #0

Rating: ★★★★☆ (4.75/5)

Dates Read: 3/11/24 - 3/15/24

On the morning of the tenth Hunger Games, eighteen-year-old Coriolanus Snow from the Capital is getting ready to be a mentor. His family, once powerful, is now struggling, and Coriolanus sees this as his chance to restore their status. But there's a catch: he has to mentor the female tribute from District 12, the lowest-ranked district.

As Coriolanus prepares for the Games, he knows that every decision he makes could make or break his chances of success. Inside the arena, it's a fight to the death, but outside, he starts to care for his tribute. Coriolanus must balance following the rules with doing whatever it takes to survive.

This book really dives into President Snow's character, giving us a better understanding of why he acts the way he does in the original Hunger Games movies.

I loved all the little references to the original trilogy scattered throughout the book, like mentions of characters' relatives and familiar places. They made the story feel more real and immersive. One of the coolest parts for me was learning about the backstory of iconic songs like 'Deep in the Meadow' and 'The Hanging Tree.' It was fascinating to see how they fit into the bigger picture of the Hunger Games universe.

Overall, I was completely hooked on this book and couldn't stop reading. And after finishing it, rewatching the first three movies was even more enjoyable because I noticed so many new details. It really enhanced my appreciation for the Hunger Games world. If you're a Hunger Games fan, I highly recommend this.
