The Only Survivors by Megan Miranda

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Dates Read: 11/2/23 - 11/3/23

A decade after a tragic accident claimed the lives of classmates and teachers during a school service trip, the surviving students, now adults, reunite annually to commemorate the event. On the tenth anniversary, Cassidy Bent, who has distanced herself from the group, receives news of another survivor's death. As they gather for their reunion, Cassidy notices strange occurrences and the sudden absence of the organizer, Amaya. With a storm approaching, the group is faced with new challenges, triggering suspicions and raising questions about their ability to protect one another, just as they vowed to do years ago.

"The Only Survivors" tells the story of Cassidy, an event planner haunted by her high school past. The book switches between Cassidy's present and the past perspectives of other survivors. Cassidy felt emotionally distant, which made it hard to connect with her. However, I really enjoyed the chapters set in the past.

I'm a big fan of Miranda's writing, and I'd probably read anything by her at this point. The beginning of this book grabbed my attention, but the slow buildup didn't pay off as much as I'd hoped. The setting was good, and there was definite suspense. I liked the drama within the friend group. The story was interesting overall, and I always felt compelled to read on to know the end, even though it didn't have the same impact as some of Miranda's other books. It fell somewhere in the middle for me, not the best but not the worst either.
