Good Girl, Bad Blood by Holly Jackson

A Good Girl's Guide to Murder #2

Rating: ★★★★☆

Dates Read: 1/10/24 - 1/13/24

Pip, once an amateur detective, left that life behind after a viral true-crime podcast with Ravi Singh. However, when someone she knows, Jamie Reynolds, goes missing on the anniversary of two deaths, and the police are indifferent, Pip feels compelled to investigate. As she digs into her town's secrets, she realizes with everyone watching, the stakes are high. The challenge is to find Jamie before it's too late, while grappling with the mysteries unveiled along the way.

“It is my responsibility because I started something and I can’t now take it back. Whatever it did to me, to all of us, I still solved a double murder case last year. Now I have six hundred thousand subscribers who will listen to me and I’m in a position to use that, to help people. To help Jamie.”

Good Girl, Bad Blood felt like the perfect mix of aspects from YA, mystery/thriller, and romance. There were funny moments between the friends, plenty of creepy or tense moments that had my brain running in circles, and so many sweet moments between Ravi and Pip. I love the way the investigation unfolds. I feel like the aspects of the investigation get a little unbelievable sometimes, especially with amateur sleuth stories, but not here. Pip collects clues, follows them up, which moves us on to the next set of clues. One of the best things about this series, in my opinion, is the mixed media aspect. I love going through the interviews, articles, maps, and texts. I listened to the audiobook for this one, and it made it 10x more fun, I felt like I was going through an old case file.

I really liked how the characters were written, as well. Pip goes through so much in this book, and she honestly starts to spiral. I think I loved her more as she spiraled, because she became so relatable. She's totally traumatized, and I think Jackson done a great job writing about grappling with your own morality. This book explores the darkness than can be hidden in people, and it does it well.

My only complaint, which honestly isn't a complaint because the rest of it was perfect, is that the 'who' aspect of the mystery seemed obvious to me from the very beginning. That being said, the rest of the reveal/ending, I didn't expect whatsoever. I absolutely loved it, and the ending broke my heart. I can't wait to read the next book in the series, even if I'm not ready to say goodbye to these characters. Thankfully, it's being made into a show that I can't wait to watch. The casting looks absolutely perfect, and I have high hopes for it. Good Girl, Bad Blood is a fantastic sequel that's so fast-paced, you won't be able to turn the pages fast enough.
