Nightbane by Alex Aster
Lightlark #2
Rating: ★★★★☆
Dates Read: 12/26/23 - 12/27/23
Isla Crown, having broken ancient curses and won the love of two powerful rulers across six realms, faces the aftermath of a devastating betrayal. Instead of embracing her role as the newly crowned leader, Isla seeks refuge in Lightlark's enticing distractions. Her fellow rulers resist her victory, and doubt lingers about the legitimacy of her ascent to power. In the middle of danger and unraveling secrets, Isla must navigate her responsibilities to her people while confronting the treacherous whims of her own heart.
I enjoyed witnessing Isla's character development and her adaptation to the new realities and powers introduced in the first book. Isla's journey into leadership, the exploration of her powers, and the unraveling of forgotten memories provided substantial depth to the storyline.
The second half of the book was a gripping experience, and as the pieces fell into place, the narrative gained momentum. As far as the romance goes, the "before" chapters and the ending have me questioning everything.
Overall, Nightbane serves as a strong follow-up to Lightlark, and I am highly anticipating book three.
