Girl in Pieces by Kathleen Glasgow
Rating: ★★★✰✰
Dates Read: 6/3/23 - 6/4/23
This book is very triggering, if you struggle with suicidal thoughts or self-harm, I would not recommend this book.
At seventeen, Charlotte Davis has experienced more loss than most in a lifetime. She copes by learning to forget, finding solace in broken glass that washes away sorrow. Each new scar hardens her heart, numbing the pain. But sometimes, reaching the edge is necessary to find a way back.
“That's how hearts get broken, you know. When you believe in promises.”
I would rate this higher, but it was so difficult to get through that I can't. That has nothing to do with the author's skill, or the writing itself. I was given this novel as a Christmas gift, and I probably should've read some TW's before reading. However, I must admit it was a very good read. The author's note was beautifully written, and probably my favorite part of the whole thing.
Throughout the book, I experienced a rollercoaster of emotions, from sadness and guilt to hope and disappointment. The story delves into dark and upsetting subjects, but amid the sadness, there was also hope, especially when witnessing Charlie's moments of improvement and joy. Charlie's character, despite making irrational decisions, evoked sympathy from me. Her experiences had profoundly changed her, leading her to act out and confront difficult emotions. Her journey to find life and love despite her struggles was compelling.
In the end, the book left me feeling quite sad, given its exploration of challenging themes. While it was difficult to get through, I recognize its strength in evoking such emotions and prompting contemplation. Despite the emotional toll, I believe it was a well-crafted and impactful read.
