The Selection by Kiera Cass
The Selection #1.
Rating: ★★★★☆
Dates Read: 8/15/23 - 8/16/23
Thirty-five young women are given the extraordinary chance to escape their predetermined lives. Imagine stepping into a realm of opulent gowns, dazzling gems, and the enchanting prospect of capturing the heart of the charismatic Prince Maxon.
However, our protagonist, America Singer, brings a unique perspective. She's caught between the allure of this opportunity and the complexities of her secret affection for Aspen, who resides in a lower social stratum. As America embarks on this competitive journey, she must forsake her familiar surroundings and contend for a crown that she grapples with desiring. Amidst this grandeur, the palace is also a hotbed of tension due to the threat of violent uprisings by rebels.
I really liked America's character in "The Selection." She's strong and selfless, joining the Selection to help her family and escape her complicated relationship with Aspen. Prince Maxon's introduction changes things up, he's charming and princely, and I found his reactions, like dealing with crying ladies, cute. Even though America dislikes it, his use of "my dear" is funny.
Prince Maxon is kind and wants to find love among the 35 girls in the palace. It's clear that America might be the one, but her mixed feelings for Aspen create a dilemma in her growing connection with Maxon. Though Aspen has his moments, I'm more drawn to Maxon. The chemistry between America and Maxon is great, and I can't wait to read the next book in this series!
