The Surrogate Mother by Freida McFadden

Rating:

Dates Read: 2/18/23 - 2/19/23

Abby has always dreamed of becoming a mother, but her journey to parenthood has been riddled with disappointment and heartbreak. After facing numerous failed infertility treatments and adoption attempts, it feels like her dream may never come true. However, her personal assistant, Monica, unexpectedly offers a solution that could make all of Abby's dreams a reality.

Monica's generous offer promises to fulfill Abby's deepest desires, but little does Abby know that it comes with a horrifying twist. As she becomes pregnant with the help of Monica, Abby soon discovers that her assistant is hiding a dark and twisted secret. The woman carrying her child is not who she claims to be, and she will go to extreme lengths to achieve her own sinister goals. Now, Abby finds herself entangled in a nightmarish situation where she must fight to protect herself and her future child from the true intentions of her deceitful assistant.

This book was a rollercoaster of insanity! While I enjoyed the suspense and drama, I have to admit it was a bit over the top at times. The main character, Abby, was relatable in her desire for a baby, but her poor decision-making skills were frustrating. Her husband also had his fair share of questionable choices, making it hard to fully root for their relationship.

The real star of the show was the assistant, Monica, who was clearly up to something from the start. I found myself shouting at Abby to see the red flags, but she remained trusting and naive throughout. The book was filled with devilish twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat, but I couldn't help but think that the storyline has been seen before in other books and movies.

The plot kept getting more and more ridiculous, with the surrogate displaying some seriously concerning behavior, and yet, the husband seemed blind to it all. The book had moments of frustration and disbelief, but it also had me captivated, unable to put it down. It's a fast-paced, sinister drama that will keep you entertained, even if some of the twists feel a bit too extreme. Despite its flaws, I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a wild and thrilling ride in the world of domestic drama and suspense.
