Victoria Barnett appears to have the perfect life—a successful career, a loving husband, and a beautiful home with plans for a family. But when a terrible accident leaves her severely injured and unable to walk, talk, or care for herself, everything crumbles. Sylvia Robinson is hired by Victoria's husband to assist in her care. However, Sylvia soon realizes that Victoria is more aware than she was led to believe. Victoria desperately wants to share her story, but her condition prevents her from doing so.
Then, while rummaging through a drawer, Sylvia stumbles upon Victoria's hidden diary—and its contents are shocking. What secrets does the diary hold, and how will they unravel the truth behind Victoria's life and her mysterious accident?
This book had me hooked from the beginning, and I flew through it like nobody's business. It reminded me a lot of "Verity" by CoHo, which I loved. The story kept me engaged, but I couldn't help but feel frustrated with some of the characters. I wanted to yell at them to smarten up! But that's also what made it so entertaining—I was eager to see if anyone would wise up.
The plot had its twists and turns, and while it was enjoyable, it did feel a bit more predictable compared to the author's other works. Nevertheless, I still found it engaging and couldn't put it down. However, there were moments where I questioned Sylvia's choices, and some parts of the story felt familiar from other thrillers I've read. Despite this, the book still had enough uniqueness to stand out.
I liked the ending, except for the very last section, which brought the overall experience down for me. But that might be a matter of personal preference. Overall, it was an easy and entertaining read that kept me guessing till the end. "The Wife Upstairs" is another great addition to Freida McFadden's impressive collection of thrilling stories that will keep you up all night, eager to uncover the surprises that await you.
