Things We Do in the Dark by Jennifer Hillier
Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3.75/5)
Dates Read: 10/11/23 - 10/13/23
Paris Peralta finds herself in a nightmare when she's arrested for her celebrity husband's murder. However, her real fear isn't the murder charge—it's the potential exposure of her hidden past. Years ago, Ruby Reyes, also convicted of murder, recognizes Paris and threatens to reveal her secrets. With no options left, Paris must confront her dark history to protect her newfound life. The stakes are high: facing her past is the only way to avoid not one, but two murder charges.
I got really engrossed in the story, even though I didn't find any of the characters particularly likable. The character development was impressive, especially with the main character—I felt deeply connected to her journey. The storytelling was skillfully done, and I appreciated how the plot unfolded.
Overall, I found the book entertaining, and I'm definitely interested in reading more from this author. While I guessed the first major reveal early on, the process of unraveling the mystery was engaging. However, the plot slowed down in Part Two, spending a lot of time building up to a twist that felt quite obvious by the end of Part One.
The conclusion, though, was well-executed and felt just right. It didn't feel rushed or overly complicated. This was my first experience with Hillier's writing, and I'm excited to dive into more of her works in the future.
