The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

The Naturals #1

Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3.5/5)

Dates Read: 11/16/23 - 11/17/23

Seventeen-year-old Cassie possesses an extraordinary talent for reading people, a skill she hasn't taken seriously until the FBI recruits her for a classified program. The agency uses exceptional teenagers to solve notorious cold cases, thrusting Cassie into a world where her abilities become crucial. As she joins a group of teens with unique gifts, including the sarcastic Michael and brooding Dean, Cassie discovers that their lives are more complex than they seem. The danger escalates when a new killer emerges, and the Naturals, as they're called, find themselves in a deadly game of cat and mouse where using their exceptional abilities becomes a matter of survival.

To start this off, I want to say two things. One, this is VERY YA. I've only ever read The Inheritance Games, which I absolutely loved, so I'm hoping that the quality will increase over the next books. Two, I love Criminal Minds, so this probably could've been the worst book I had ever read, and I still would have loved it. Despite its unmistakable YA vibe, I found myself completely engrossed, eagerly flipping through the pages. The YA-ness of it gave me a nostalgic feeling.

'The Naturals' took me by surprise with its unexpected plot twist at the end! The conclusion left me with literary whiplash, in the best way possible. If you're in the mood for a captivating, thrilling, and slightly suspenseful read with quick chapters, surprising twists, and a touch of romance, this one is definitely worth checking out for a fun and enjoyable experience. I can't wait to start Killer Instinct.
