A Lovely Lie by Jamie Lynn Hendricks
Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3.5/5)
Dates Read: 1/15/24 - 1/28/24
In 1999, Scarlett Russo and her best friend Pepper faced tragedy on their senior picnic night, leaving two classmates dead. Their pact of silence bound them together, until Pepper Pepper left town and Scarlett never heard from her again.
Two decades later, Scarlett has created a stable life in Florida. However, the past resurfaces when Pepper's daughter, Zoey, arrives with news of Pepper's death. Zoey, an aspiring investigative journalist, unravels the mystery with a cryptic letter that hints at long-buried secrets, including Pepper's plans for an abortion. Scarlett is forced to confront her concealed past as Zoey seeks answers about her mother and the events that transpired after that fateful night.
This started off slow, and I could see where the story was going pretty early on. But as I got to know the characters better, I became more interested in their lives and secrets. The writing was good, with vivid descriptions and realistic dialogue. But the story took a while to get going, and I wish it had picked up the pace sooner. Once things started moving, though, it got more exciting.
Overall, while it wasn't my favorite book, I'm still curious to read more from Hendricks in the future. My rating is mostly based on the second half of the book, which was more engaging than the beginning. Big thank you to NetGalley and Scarlet Publishing for the digital ARC in exchange for an honest review. A Lovely Lie publishes on May 28, 2024!
