The Villa by Rachel Hawkins
Rating: ★★★☆☆
Dates Read: 2/6/24 - 2/7/24
Emily and Chess, once close friends, plan a trip to Italy to rekindle their bond. They stay at Villa Aestas, once Villa Rosato, where a murder occurred in 1974. As Emily delves into the past, she suspects there's more to the murder than meets the eye, and tensions rise between her and Chess as secrets unravel. The villa's dark history threatens to claim another victim before the truth is revealed.
Initially, I was excited about the mystery of a murder happening in a villa. I felt that the villa itself didn't have the eerie atmosphere I was expecting. The pacing of the book was fast, which kept me turning the pages, but I was expecting a darker, more intense twist, but the story took a spiritual route instead.
I enjoyed seeing Emily trying to uncover the truth, but the big reveals didn't feel as exciting as I hoped. It was still an enjoyable read, but it didn't leave as much of an impact on me as I thought it would. Overall, while The Villa had its moments, it wasn't the standout book I was hoping for from Rachel Hawkins.
